God’s Purpose for Man: Earth (1)

As a follow-up (and so much more) to my last post on the question of boredom in heaven, I’ve decided to do a book review. Except I’ll only review the first part of the first chapter. This book is deep as it is dense. I’ll be reviewing “God’s Plan and God’s Rest” from The Glorious Church, by Watchman Nee.

watchman neeWatchman Nee was a Christian minister used much by the Lord to recover and release truths in the Bible concerning Christ and the church. He planted many churches in the first half of the twentieth century in Asia until his imprisonment by the communist government of China in 1952. He remained imprisoned until his death in 1972.

God’s Plan for Man: Rule the Earth

Genesis 1:26-28 shows God’s plan in creating man. God didn’t plan for man to go to heaven. He desires man to govern the earth.

26 And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of heaven and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. –

27 And God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

28 And God blessed them; and God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of heaven and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.

Notice that God didn’t create man in a certain image unlike His own; He made man in His own image that man would represent Him on the earth. Only when man would rule over the earth would God be satisfied; then He could rest. He never intended that men should merely be sinners saved by grace in heaven. He needs to gain men whom He can trust to rule for him on earth.

Next, why is the earth crucial to God?
