7 Blessings in Handling Finances

money in hand offeredWe recently spent a week covering the topic of managing money in the church in Austin, an important but oft-overlooked area of edification.

I plan on blogging a few posts on this topic, since I’ve been really helped by what has come out so far. To begin this series, here are seven blessings that come through handling finances God’s way.

  1. Knowing God as the source and provider of everything – Psa. 24:1The earth is Jehovah’s, and its fullness, The habitable land and those who dwell in it.
  2. Becoming rich toward God – Luke 12:21So is he who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.
  3. Storing up treasures for ourselves in heaven – Luke 12:33Sell your possessions and give alms; make for yourselves purses which do not become old, an unfailing treasure in the heavens, where thief does not come near nor even moth corrupts;
  4. Making friends for ourselves by means of the mammon of unrighteousness – Luke 16:9And I say to you, Make friends for yourselves by means of the mammon of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they may receive you into the eternal tabernacles.
  5. Being enriched unto all liberality – 2 Cor 9:11You in everything are being enriched unto all liberality, which works out through us thanksgiving to God
  6. Becoming a factor of thanksgiving and glorifying to God – 2 Cor 9:12Because the ministry of this service is not only filling up the lack of the saints, but is also abounding through many thanksgivings to God. They, through the approving of this ministry, are glorifying God based upon the subjection unto the gospel of Christ that issues from your confession, and upon the liberality of the fellowship to them and to all;
  7. Participating in the surpassing grace of God – 2 Cor 9:14-15While in petition on your behalf they also long after you on account of the surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

These seven points came out of the church members’ speaking over the topic. While this list is in no way exhaustive, each of these points has riches we should aspire towards.

I particularly appreciate the power of the life of Christ in points six and seven. In the Apostle Paul’s time the gentile believers’ financial support to the Jewish believers was a living testament to the grace of Christ in both parties – these were former enemies who now begged to bear each others’ financial burdens!

Check back soon for another post exploring “Robbing the Usurper”, from the ministry of Watchman Nee.

Let me know of other blessings you know of in the Word regarding this topic.
