12 Points on Our Response to the Lord’s Second Coming

We recently studied the vision of the smiting stone in the book of Daniel in the church in Austin. As part of our study we considered our own attitude toward the Lord’s second coming. That led me to dig into the Word to see what it says about our response to His coming. I shared this (non-exhaustive) list earlier but I feel it’s appropriate to post it here.

1. Realize that the Lord does not intend that any perish
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord does not delay regarding the promise, as some count delay, but is long-suffering toward you, not intending that any perish but that all advance to repentance.

2. Know that His coming is near
Luke 21:31
So also you, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.

3. Await His coming
1 Thessalonians 1:10
And await His Son from the heavens, whom He raised from the dead, Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath which is coming.

Philippians 3:20
For our commonwealth exists in the heavens, from which also we eagerly await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

4. Watch for His return
Matthew 24:42
Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord comes.

5. Pray for His return
Luke 21:36
But be watchful at every time, beseeching that you would prevail to escape all these things which are about to happen and stand before the Son of Man.

Revelation 22:20
He who testifies these things says, Yes, I come quickly. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

6. Prepare according to His will before His return
Luke 12:47
And that slave who knew his master’s will and did not prepare or do according to his will, will receive many lashes;

7. Be ready for His coming
2 Timothy 4:2
Proclaim the word; be ready in season and out of season; convict, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and teaching.

8. Expect and hasten the day of God
2 Peter 3:12
Expecting and hastening the coming of the day of God, on account of which the heavens, being on fire, will be dissolved, and the elements, burning with intense heat, are to be melted away?

9. Become faithful and prudent
Matthew 24:45
Who then is the faithful and prudent slave, whom the master has set over his household to give them food at the proper time?

10. Set your hope on His revelation
1 Peter 1:13
Therefore girding up the loins of your mind and being sober, set your hope perfectly on the grace being brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

11. Give heed to the prophetic word until He comes
2 Peter 1:19
And we have the prophetic word made more firm, to which you do well to give heed as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;

12. Love His appearing
2 Timothy 4:8
Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of brighteousness, with which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will recompense me in that day, and not only me but also all those who have loved His appearing.

May we know He is coming soon, and may we be those who love the Lord’s appearing.

  1. Great points, Merrill. I’m especially touched by the matter of loving the Lord’s appearing. We may love the Lord, but do we love His appearing? May the Lord make us such ones like the apostle Paul who love the Lord’s appearing.

  2. I also appreciate these 12 points of response to the Lord coming. I was touched by your 1st point on the Lord not intending that any should perish that if we really love the Lord’s appearing, we also love to see sinners, the perishing ones, be saved. You concluded with Second Tim 4:8 which speaks of the Lord’s reward to those who love His appearing. The previous verses in that chapter, verses 1-7, speak of proclaiming the word and of doing the work of an evangelist. May our call for the Lord to come be matched with a call for the thirsty to come and drink the living water (Rev. 22:17). If we have such an attitude we will be those preparing for the Lord’s coming.

    1. I appreciate the encouragement to “do the work of an evangelist.” The Lord has given us a tremendous lot that we can not only call for Him to return but for sinners to be saved!

  3. I love this compilation of verses and aspects concerning what should our response be towards the Lord’s coming.

These days we have been enjoying the aspect of taking heed to the prophetic word…. we need to take the Word of God into us in a living way so that the Word would shine in us and even through us… This is one of the ways to become the living, shining, and overcoming stars as the messengers in the churches!
