We recently studied the vision of the smiting stone in the book of Daniel in the church in Austin. As part of our study we considered our own attitude toward the Lord’s second coming. That led me to dig into the Word to see what it says about our response to His coming. I shared this (non-exhaustive) list earlier but I feel it’s appropriate to post it here.
1. Realize that the Lord does not intend that any perish
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord does not delay regarding the promise, as some count delay, but is long-suffering toward you, not intending that any perish but that all advance to repentance.
2. Know that His coming is near
So also you, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.
3. Await His coming
1 Thessalonians 1:10
And await His Son from the heavens, whom He raised from the dead, Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath which is coming.
For our commonwealth exists in the heavens, from which also we eagerly await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
4. Watch for His return
Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord comes.
5. Pray for His return
But be watchful at every time, beseeching that you would prevail to escape all these things which are about to happen and stand before the Son of Man.
He who testifies these things says, Yes, I come quickly. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
6. Prepare according to His will before His return
And that slave who knew his master’s will and did not prepare or do according to his will, will receive many lashes;
7. Be ready for His coming
2 Timothy 4:2
Proclaim the word; be ready in season and out of season; convict, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and teaching.
8. Expect and hasten the day of God
2 Peter 3:12
Expecting and hastening the coming of the day of God, on account of which the heavens, being on fire, will be dissolved, and the elements, burning with intense heat, are to be melted away?
9. Become faithful and prudent
Who then is the faithful and prudent slave, whom the master has set over his household to give them food at the proper time?
10. Set your hope on His revelation
1 Peter 1:13
Therefore girding up the loins of your mind and being sober, set your hope perfectly on the grace being brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
11. Give heed to the prophetic word until He comes
2 Peter 1:19
And we have the prophetic word made more firm, to which you do well to give heed as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;
12. Love His appearing
2 Timothy 4:8
Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of brighteousness, with which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will recompense me in that day, and not only me but also all those who have loved His appearing.
May we know He is coming soon, and may we be those who love the Lord’s appearing.
